Black Joy Farm

We have solidified the space as a safe, healthy, bold space where MaGes are nurtured to be their full selves, un-policed and judgement free.

Black Joy Farm, formerly know as Libertad Urban Farm is the result of a 7 year community led campaign to create a radical food-growing green space in the South Bronx. We have solidified the space as a safe, healthy, bold space where MaGes are nurtured to be their full selves, un-policed and judgment-free.

Not only do MaGes, especially cash-poor, low income, and immigrant MaGes need bold spaces to live, love, and learn in but they often suffer disproportionately more from hunger and food inaccess which are symptoms of gendered poverty and economic exclusion rooted in racism and sexism. Too often they are faced with choosing between housing, clothing, schooling, and medical costs, food is not often seen as a priority, and cheap, calorie deficient foods that flood cash poor Black communities are the accessible and affordable option. Black Joy Farm and our buying club offer an alternative that enriches the overall health of folks both emotionally and physically. Black MaGes have helped to grow and giveaway hundreds of pounds of food.

Our 7 Year History

In 2013, we received a license from NYC Housing, Preservation and Development to steward the property and in February of 2014, the property was transferred to Parks Department, ensuring that it could not be sold for development and that its only purpose would be to be a green space for the community. A community that already has such few green spaces.

Since 2014, we have grown thousands of pounds of food. Housed our South Bronx Mobile Market Buying Club, hosted over 100 Summer Youth Employment, put on dozens of workshops such as family movie night, herbs as medicine, community workdays, team-building exercises, and thrown dope parties that center the radical joy of Black MaGes.
